Wonder Tales from Scottish Myth and Legend Customer Reviews
:- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Mark on Amzon -- Well-written, but unconvincing with regards to cultural-authenticity : The book is well-written, but I was looking for something about Scottish folklore. This book makes reference to "Scottish gods" and "Scottish goddesses" and that's the problem: By the time of Dal Riata, my understanding is that both the Scots and the Picts were Christians. Furthermore, the Scots of Dal Riata were part of a political and cultural entity that stretched across the southwestern highlands and islands of Scotland and into what is now Northern Ireland - therefore I would expect any remaining reference to mythological deities in Scottish folklore to reference deities from Ireland's mythology (and again, the Celts of Britain and Ireland were exposed to Christianity fairly early on). I don't know for certain, but this book feels very much like some well-written tales that spring mostly from the author's mind, rather than from folklore actually taken from Scottish cultural heritage. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from onegoodstory -- Wonderful storytelling : Got the audio and enjoyed it so much had to get the kindle too. The telling of the stories is relayed wonderfully. The narrator has an accent but still is easy to understand. On a par with George MacDonald's Phantasies. I like to listen at night to help go to sleep and this is great for that but I find myself listening during the day also. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2021 )
